About Redacted Reveal

Redacted Reveal is a daily mystery puzzle. You see a short paragraph with most key words covered by black redaction bars. Tap a bar to reveal a word, then submit a guess for the hidden topic. The first 30 seconds are intentionally simple: the title hint and a few visible glue words tell you the kind of answer to expect, and one or two reveals are usually enough to guess.

Daily mode picks a single clue deterministically from the bundled bank by UTC date, so every player sees the same puzzle on the same day. Practice mode draws a random clue from the same bank for warm-up rounds. Each round comes with a small reveal budget and three guess attempts. Scoring rewards solving with as few reveals and wrong guesses as possible, with a small time bonus for fast solves.

All clue paragraphs are originally written for this game. Daily completion, your current streak, and your high score live in browser local storage on your device only. Your typed guesses are never sent off device, never logged, and never appear in the share or recap card. The recap shows the canonical answer, your reveal count, and your wrong-guess count.

How to Play

  1. Tap a black redaction bar to spend one reveal token and uncover the word underneath.
  2. Type your guess in the text box and press enter, or tap submit. Common alternate spellings are accepted.
  3. You have a small reveal budget per clue and three guess attempts per round. Use them wisely.
  4. Daily mode runs one fresh clue per UTC day. Practice mode lets you keep playing with random clues from the same bank.
  5. Use the keyboard if you prefer. Each redaction bar is a real button, so Tab moves between bars and Enter or Space reveals.

Tips & Tricks

  • Read the title hint first. It tells you the broad category, which is usually enough to narrow the answer set before you spend any reveals.
  • Reveal at the start of the paragraph. The first sentence usually carries the most distinctive nouns and is the cheapest path to a guess.
  • Save guesses for high-confidence attempts. Three wrong guesses ends the round, even if you still have reveals left.
  • Common nicknames work. The matcher accepts close alternate spellings and ignores accents and punctuation, so do not worry about typing the exact canonical form.

Scoring

  • Base score: 100 points for solving the clue.
  • Reveal bonus: up to 100 points; the more of your reveal budget you keep unspent, the bigger the bonus.
  • Guess bonus: up to 60 points; one wrong guess slot saved is worth more than zero, three saved is the maximum.
  • Time bonus: up to 40 points, decaying linearly to zero over a 90 second window from your first reveal or guess.
  • A failed round earns 0 points across the board.

Daily and practice

  • Daily: one clue, deterministic by UTC date. Replaying the same daily does not extend your streak.
  • Practice: random clue from the same bank. Use it to warm up before the daily.
  • Streak: only a fresh UTC daily solve bumps the daily streak counter; a fail resets it to zero.

Privacy

  • Redacted Reveal does not send your typed guess off device. Telemetry events carry only derived numbers (score, reveal count, guess count, mode).
  • The recap and share card use the canonical answer and your scoring numbers; your typed guess text never appears.
  • Daily completion, current streak, and high score are stored in browser local storage on your device only. Clearing site data resets them.

Use cases*

  • Daily curiosity break: one clue is short enough for a coffee queue.
  • Vocabulary warm-up: predicting the missing word builds a small habit of close reading.
  • Friendly competition: every player sees the same daily clue, so scores compare cleanly.
  • Mobile-friendly play: redaction bars and the guess form reflow to small screens and only need taps.
